A new Royal Mail distribution centre could be built in Thurrock. The proposed site in Oliver Road, would be partly demolished to make way for office space and a unit for vehicle maintenance. The plans have been backed by Thurrock Council.

Earlier this year, an area of marsh land in West Thurrock had been widely reported as a possible site for a distribution centre, but the charity 'Bugs Life' challenged the development saying it would endanger many types of rare insects and invertebrates. Bugs Life lost the case and the site is to be built on but it is thought that Royal Mail lost interest after so much publicity.

The new centre on the old Euro Terminal site could create as many as 200 jobs and now needs final approval from the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation.
